Frequently Asked Questions — Carbon Fiber Felt Welding Blankets
What temperature can carbon fiber felt welding blankets withstand?
Our Knight Armor Carbon Fiber Felt Welding Blankets are rated for incremental contact up to 1800°F (1000°C). This is significantly higher than most standard fiberglass welding blankets which top out at 1000°F–1400°F, making carbon fiber felt the appropriate choice for heavy welding, slag exposure, and high-heat industrial environments.
What is PANOX / pan oxidized fiber?
PANOX is the trade name for oxidized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber — also known as carbon felt or carbonized fiber. Unlike fiberglass, PANOX fiber is inherently flame resistant at the molecular level rather than through surface treatment, meaning its flame resistance does not degrade with use. It is also significantly softer and less irritating than fiberglass, making it comfortable to handle without protective clothing.
Are these blankets fiberglass-free?
Yes. Our carbon fiber felt welding blankets are made entirely from PANOX carbonized fiber with no fiberglass content. This eliminates the skin irritation and respiratory concerns associated with handling fiberglass welding blankets.
What certifications do these blankets carry?
Our carbon fiber felt welding blankets are certified by FM Global, CFM (California Fire Marshal), and NFPA-701 for flame resistance. These certifications cover sparks, spatter, and slag protection in commercial and industrial welding environments.
Can these blankets be used horizontally (lying flat)?
Yes. Unlike welding curtains which are for vertical use only, welding blankets can be used both vertically (hung as a shield) and horizontally (laid flat to protect floors, tables, and equipment from sparks and spatter falling from above). This versatility makes them essential for overhead welding work and surface protection.
Can the blankets be cut to a custom size?
Yes. The carbon felt material can be cut easily with scissors or a utility knife to fit any specific shape or dimension. For large quantities of material that you plan to cut yourself, see our Carbon Fiber Felt Rolls which are more economical for bulk or large-area applications.
What sizes are available?
Stock sizes range from 18"x18" up to 10'x10'. Custom sizes are also available — call for pricing and lead time on non-standard dimensions.
What other welding blanket materials do you carry?
We carry fiberglass, silica, acrylic coated fiberglass, silicone coated fiberglass, and aluminized fiberglass welding blankets. Browse the full Welding Blankets & Rolls collection to compare all material options for your application.
