Slag Shield™ Acrylic Coated Fiberglass Welding Blankets
Steel Guard Safety's Slag Shield™ Black Acrylic Coated Fiberglass Welding Blankets are built for welding environments where slag and heavy spatter are the primary hazard. The black acrylic coating applied to the 28 oz fiberglass base creates a tough, abrasion-resistant surface that sheds slag and repels spatter, oil, and most liquids — extending blanket life in high-impact welding zones. Use these acrylic coated fiberglass welding blankets as vertical curtains for stick welding and MIG/arc operations, or lay them flat as surface protection in areas with medium spark and heavy spatter exposure.
Important: Not for Heat Treating or Stress Relief
Slag Shield acrylic coated fiberglass welding blankets are designed for spark, spatter, and slag containment in active welding operations. They are not suitable for heat treating or stress relief applications. For furnace work, heat treating, and stress relief up to 1800°F, see our Silica Welding Blankets.
Ideal for uses in:
• Welding vertically (as a curtain) — general welding with light to medium sparks
• Welding horizontally (as a blanket) — general welding with medium sparks
• Great protection against slag and spatter
• Made in the USA

Frequently Asked Questions — Slag Shield Acrylic Coated Fiberglass Welding Blankets
What is the Slag Shield acrylic coating and what does it do?
The Slag Shield black acrylic coating is applied to the surface of the 28 oz fiberglass base material. It creates a harder, more abrasion-resistant outer layer that sheds slag, repels spatter, and resists water, oil, and most liquids. This extends the service life of the blanket in high-impact welding zones compared to uncoated fiberglass, which can absorb liquids and wear down faster under repeated slag and spatter impact.
Can these blankets be used for heat treating or stress relief?
No. Slag Shield acrylic coated fiberglass welding blankets are specifically designed for spark, spatter, and slag containment in active welding operations. They are not suitable for heat treating, stress relief, or furnace applications. For those applications, see our Silica Welding Blankets rated for heat treating and stress relief up to 1800°F.
What welding processes are these blankets suitable for?
Suitable for stick welding, MIG, and arc welding operations with light to medium sparks and medium spatter. The acrylic coating makes these blankets particularly well suited for stick welding environments where heavier spatter and slag impact are common.
What weight is this blanket?
28 oz per square yard — heavier than our 18 oz heat cleaned fiberglass option, providing greater thermal mass and more robust protection in medium-spatter environments.
Can these be used as vertical curtains?
Yes. Grommets are punched on 2' centers on all four sides, allowing these blankets to be hung vertically as welding curtains or laid flat horizontally as surface protection. The acrylic coating is particularly beneficial in vertical installations where the blanket face absorbs direct impact from sparks and spatter.
What sizes are available?
Stock sizes are 6'x6' and 6'x8'. Custom sizes are available — call for pricing and lead time on non-standard dimensions.
Is bulk roll material available in this coating?
Yes. See our Acrylic Coated Fiberglass Welding Blanket Rolls in 40" x 150 ft format for large-area installations and custom-cut applications.
What other welding blanket options do you carry?
We carry carbon fiber felt, heat cleaned fiberglass, silica, silicone coated fiberglass, and aluminized fiberglass welding blankets. Browse the full Welding Blankets & Rolls collection to compare all material options.
