What is the Slag Shield acrylic coating and what does it do?

The Slag Shield black acrylic coating is applied to the surface of the 28 oz fiberglass base material. It creates a harder, more abrasion-resistant outer layer that sheds slag, repels spatter, and resists water, oil, and most liquids. This extends the service life of the blanket in high-impact welding zones compared to uncoated fiberglass, which can absorb liquids and wear down faster under repeated slag and spatter impact.

Can these blankets be used for heat treating or stress relief?

No. Slag Shield acrylic coated fiberglass welding blankets are specifically designed for spark, spatter, and slag containment in active welding operations. What welding processes are these blankets suitable for?

28 oz per square yard — heavier than our 18 oz heat cleaned fiberglass option, providing greater thermal mass and more robust protection in medium-spatter environments.

Can these be used as vertical curtains?

Yes. Grommets are punched on 2' centers on all four sides, allowing these blankets to be hung vertically as welding curtains or laid flat horizontally as surface protection. The acrylic coating is particularly beneficial in vertical installations where the blanket face absorbs direct impact from sparks and spatter.
