A thermal tarp is two layers of heavy vinyl with a foam core sewn between them. Ours use 10 oz coated vinyl front and back over closed cell foam, in 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch thickness, with 2 inch double lock stitched hems and grommets set on all four corners and every 2 feet on center around the full perimeter.

These are dense and they are heavy, and that is the point. A thermal tarp that holds a stable temperature has to have enough mass to do it, and it has to survive being dragged, tied down, and left out through wind. Made in the USA, and built to come back for a second season.

1/4 Inch or 1/2 Inch

Both thicknesses use the same vinyl skins and the same construction. The difference is the foam core and what it costs you in weight and money.

• 1/4 inch closed cell foam — the working choice for most equipment covers, short term enclosures, and anywhere the tarp gets folded and stored between uses. Lighter to handle, easier to store, lower price at every size.
• 1/2 inch closed cell foam — the choice for sustained cold, overnight ground cover, or anywhere the tarp is the only thing between your work and the weather. Noticeably heavier, and worth it when the temperature swing is the whole problem.

Why We Do Not Publish an R-Value

You will see R-values on poly skin insulated tarps and curing blankets, and you will not see one here. The reason is that R-value on a tarp depends on an air pocket forming underneath it, which is a function of how you frame and deploy it rather than a property of the material. Our poly line is rated because it is sold for concrete curing, where the framed setup is standard and the number means something.

These vinyl tarps get used flat, hung vertically, wrapped around equipment, and laid over irregular loads. Publishing a single number for all of that would be misleading. What we can tell you is the foam thickness, the skin weight, and the construction, which is what actually determines how the tarp performs in your application. If you need a stated R-value for a submittal, use the poly line instead.

What These Get Used For

• Equipment and machinery covers — holds a stable temperature around hydraulics, pumps, compressors, and generators through hard temperature swings in either direction
• Ground cover and frost protection — laid over subgrade overnight to hold ground heat and keep frost from setting in
• Winter enclosures — hung off scaffolding or a frame to close in a work area and keep heaters doing something useful
• Load and material protection — waterproof vinyl on both faces keeps stored material dry while the foam moderates temperature underneath
• Concrete curing — works well over a pour, though if curing is the main job the poly curing blankets are purpose built for it

Custom Sizes

Twelve stock sizes cover most jobs, but anything we sew we can sew to your dimensions, in any of the five colors. Send us the finished size you need and we will quote it. Measure the opening or the load you need to cover and give us that number, since finished sizes run 5 to 6 inches narrower than nominal once the tarp is hemmed and grommeted.

Vinyl or Poly?

We stock two families of insulated cover, and the right one depends on the work. Vinyl and closed cell foam, which is this page, is the heavier and more abrasion resistant build, meant to be handled repeatedly. Woven poly over foam is lighter, faster to spread across a large area, less expensive per square foot, and R-rated for curing work.
