Palletized lithium-ion inventory is one of the hardest risks in a warehouse to manage. A single damaged or defective cell in a pallet of batteries, e-mobility devices, or battery-powered tools can take the whole load — and the racking around it — with it. Insurers have noticed: FM Global's guidance for lithium-ion storage now emphasizes separation and containment, and quarantining suspect or returned stock has become a standard expectation rather than a nice-to-have.
The Steel Guard Fireproof Pallet Cover is a fitted cover that drops over a loaded pallet and stays there — protecting staged inventory, isolating quarantined or returned batteries, and containing a thermal event long enough to keep it from becoming a warehouse fire. It's cut and sewn in our US factory from Draft-Tex™ fabric, built on Newtex Z-Block® silicone-coated fiberglass rated 1,800°F (982°C) continuous, and constructed to the material, seam, and thermal test parameters of 695 Part of our lithium battery fire protection line.

Where It's Used
Quarantine. A returned, recalled, damaged, or swollen battery gets covered and isolated instead of sitting exposed on a rack.
Staged inventory. Pallets of batteries, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, or battery-powered equipment awaiting put-away, shipment, or pickup.
Charging and storage zones. Covering stock in designated battery areas where compartmentalization is part of the fire plan.
Insurance and AHJ requirements. Where a carrier or fire official has asked for containment on palletized lithium-ion stock and you need a documented product to point to.
Built for a Thermal Event, Not Just Dust
Three construction decisions separate this from a tarp:
Vented at the base — deliberately. A battery in thermal runaway generates gas volume fast. A sealed cover becomes a pressure vessel. Ours blocks flame and radiant heat upward and outward while remaining open at the floor so gas vents downward and out, which is how a containment cover is supposed to behave.
Weighted gravity skirt. A 7-inch skirt keeps the cover seated to the floor without straps to fumble with, and stays put when air moves through the aisle.
Metal hardware only. Closures are metal spring hooks and D-rings — no hook-and-loop, no plastic buckles, both of which fail at temperature exactly when you need them.
Lifting loops on the top panel are 2-inch reinforced straps on backed doublers, built and tested to a 125 kg (275 lb) shock load and set on the diagonal so all four gather to a single hoist point. One person or one forklift hook lifts the cover straight off a quarantined pallet without walking around it.
Reusable
This is a reusable cover, not a disposable. Put it on, take it off, inspect it, clean it, move it to a different pallet, and keep using it throughout its service life. Only after exposure to an actual fire is it retired, because the coating in the contact zone sacrifices itself to protect the fabric beneath. For a facility that rotates quarantine stock, one cover works continuously rather than being consumed.

Construction Standard
This cover is constructed to the material, seam, and thermal test parameters of DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 — the European technical specification for lithium-ion fire limitation blankets. That specification's certification scope covers rectangular blankets intended for vehicles, which means a fitted pallet cover — from any manufacturer — falls outside what can be certified to it. Rather than imply a certification that does not exist for this product type, we state plainly what we do: we build to the specification's fabric, seam, loop-load, and thermal-cycle parameters, and we publish the results. Steel Guard covers are not third-party certified to DIN SPEC 91489, and we do not represent them as certified, compliant, or approved under that specification. There is currently no US standard specific to fireproof pallet covers.
Important Safety Notes
- This is a containment product, not an extinguisher. A lithium-ion cell in thermal runaway generates its own oxygen and can continue burning beneath the cover. Call the fire department immediately.
- The base is intentionally not sealed. Do not modify the cover to close it at the floor — a sealed cover can pressurize during a thermal event.
- No electric shock protection. This cover does not insulate against electrical hazard.
- Toxic gases. Lithium-ion fires release toxic and flammable gases. Keep clear and avoid smoke.
- Re-ignition. Cells can reignite hours or days after visible flames stop. Do not remove the cover until cleared by qualified responders.
- Not a substitute for code-required separation. Covers support a fire plan; they do not replace separation distances, storage limits, or suppression required by NFPA 855, the applicable fire code, or your insurer.

How much does a fireproof pallet cover cost?
Ours are $695 for a standard GMA 48" × 40" pallet at 48" load height and $795 at 60" load height, with custom sizes priced instantly by the calculator. Most of this category is quote-only, and the European covers that do publish prices generally land between roughly $750 and $1,500 before shipping and import costs.
Will it fit my pallet?
The standard sizes fit GMA 48" × 40" pallets — the North American standard. For Euro pallets (1200 × 800 mm), cages, stillages, or oversized loads, use the custom calculator: enter footprint and load height and the cover is built to it.
Does the cover put out a battery fire?
No. A lithium-ion cell in thermal runaway generates its own oxygen and can keep burning under any cover. This one contains the event — it blocks flame spread to adjacent pallets and racking, blocks radiant heat, and controls where smoke and gas go until responders arrive. Call the fire department immediately.
Why isn't the cover sealed at the bottom?
On purpose. Thermal runaway generates gas quickly, and a sealed cover would pressurize. Ours vents at the floor while blocking flame and heat upward and outward — containment without creating a second hazard.
Is it reusable?
Yes. Move it between pallets, inspect it, clean it, and keep it in service throughout its life. It's retired only after exposure to an actual fire.
What standard is it built to?
It's constructed to the material, seam, and thermal test parameters of DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 — the European specification for lithium-ion fire blankets. That specification's certification scope covers rectangular blankets for vehicles, so a fitted pallet cover falls outside it — no pallet cover from any manufacturer can be certified to it. We build to the parameters and say exactly that, rather than implying a certification that doesn't exist for this product type.
