An electric vehicle fire is not a car fire with a different fuel. A damaged or overheating traction battery goes into thermal runaway — a self-sustaining chemical reaction that produces its own oxygen, resists extinguishing agents, releases toxic gas, and can reignite hours or even days after the visible flames stop. Water alone often can't reach the cells. The Steel Guard EV Fire Blanket is built for that reality: drape it over the vehicle to contain the fire, block radiant heat from spreading to adjacent cars and structure, and control smoke until responders take over.
This is a heavy-duty reusable blanket, not a thin single-use drape. It's cut and sewn in our US factory from Draft-Tex™ fabric, built on Newtex Z-Block® silicone-coated fiberglass rated 1,800°F (982°C) continuous, and constructed to the design and test parameters of DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 — the European standard written specifically for electric vehicle fire blankets. What an EV Fire Blanket Costs — and Why the Range Is So Wide
You'll find "EV fire blankets" online from about $800 to over $4,000, and the spread isn't margin — it's three different products.
Single-use drapes ($800–1,400): thin coated glass, often rated around 1,000°F or lower, designed to be thrown away after one deployment. Some list a maximum working temperature below the temperature a lithium-ion fire actually reaches. Fine for a one-time emergency stock item; expensive if you ever train with it.
Light-duty imports ($1,400–2,400): roughly 480 g/m² single-layer fabric — about half the weight of a heavy-duty blanket — usually imported and frequently backordered or out of stock in the US.
Heavy-duty reusable ($2,700–4,100): multi-layer-capable construction, 1,800°F continuous ratings, load-rated handles, built to be deployed and returned to service. That's where ours sits — at the bottom of that tier, because we're the manufacturer and there's no importer or distributor markup in the price.
Reusable — the Difference That Compounds
Most EV blankets sold in the US are single-use. One deployment — a real event, a training exercise, even a false alarm — and a four-figure blanket is scrap. Ours is engineered for a working life: deploy it in drills, train your responders on it, inspect it annually, clean off contamination, refold it, and return it to service. Only after exposure to an actual fire is it retired, which is true of any lithium-ion blanket, because the coating in the contact zone sacrifices itself to protect the fabric beneath. If your department or facility runs annual drills, a reusable blanket pays for itself against a disposable in the first training cycle.
Built for Real Deployment
A 20-foot blanket is only useful if two people can actually get it over a burning car. Ours is built around that: every deployment loop is red for instant identification in heavy smoke, corner loops are supplemented with side-edge loops so no grab point is more than about six feet apart, and every loop is a 2-inch reinforced strap on a backed doubler, built and tested to a 125 kg (275 lb) shock load. Deployment is a controlled drag — two people take the leading corners and pull the blanket over the vehicle while side crews walk alongside, so nobody reaches across the leading edge.
Sizing
The blanket must cover the vehicle completely and lie flat on the ground at least 20 inches (0.5 m) past it on every side. That ground overlap is what starves the fire and blocks radiant heat from reaching the car parked next to it. Measure your largest expected vehicle, add roughly 40 inches to each dimension, and round up. Standard passenger cars take the 20' × 26'; if you're covering full-size trucks, EUVs, or vans — or you want one blanket that handles anything that pulls in — take the 22' × 30'.

Construction Standard
This blanket is constructed to the design and test parameters of DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 — the European technical specification written specifically for fire limitation blankets used on electric vehicles, developed by a consortium including German insurers, fire authorities, and vehicle manufacturers. It governs loop strength, seam construction, thermal cycling, edge finishing, deployment time, marking, and documentation. There is currently no equivalent US standard for these products. Steel Guard blankets are built to these parameters; they are not third-party certified to DIN SPEC 91489, and we do not represent them as certified, compliant, or approved under that specification.
Important Safety Notes
- This is a containment product, not an extinguisher. A lithium-ion traction battery in thermal runaway generates its own oxygen and can continue burning beneath the blanket. Call the fire department immediately.
- No electric shock protection. This blanket does not insulate against electrical hazard. Treat all EV high-voltage systems as energized.
- Static charge. Dragging the blanket over a vehicle can generate frictional static, which in a worst case may ignite flammable battery vent gases.
- Toxic gases. Lithium-ion fires release toxic and flammable gases. Deploy from upwind, stay low, and avoid all smoke.
- Re-ignition. Battery packs can reignite hours or days after visible flames stop. Do not remove the blanket until cleared by qualified responders.
- Not for an opened or removed battery pack. This blanket is intended for use over an intact vehicle, not directly on a disassembled traction battery.
- Sizing rule. The blanket must cover the vehicle completely and lie flat on the ground at least 20" (0.5 m) beyond it on all sides.
