Industrial Curtain Walls Extended info from Steel Guard Safety
What is the difference between the 1 inch and 2 inch acoustic wall blanket?
Both are quilted fiberglass blankets with a vinyl-coated facing. The 1 inch blanket (SCC-8) has an NRC of 0.75, and the 2 inch blanket (SCC-9) has an NRC of 0.86. The biggest gap is in the lower and middle frequencies: at 250 Hz the 2 inch blanket absorbs 0.99 compared to 0.47 for the 1 inch, so it does a much better job on machine hum, compressors, motors and voices. The 1 inch blanket is lighter, costs less and holds up well at higher frequencies. For most industrial noise control, the 2 inch blanket is the better choice.
Will a soundproof blanket stop noise from passing through a wall?
These blankets are sound absorbers. They cut echo, reverberation and the overall noise level inside the space where they hang. The 2 inch blanket has an STC rating of 19, so it blocks some sound, but it is not a full barrier. If you need to keep noise from reaching another room or work area, choose a blanket with a mass loaded vinyl (MLV) barrier layer, such as our sound barrier curtain kits with 1 lb or 2 lb MLV.
What does the NRC rating mean?
NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) is the average amount of sound a material absorbs across the main speech frequencies, tested per ASTM C423. An NRC of 0.86 means the blanket absorbs about 86% of the sound energy that strikes it and reflects the rest. A higher NRC means more absorption.
How do I hang the acoustic blankets?
Each blanket is hemmed on all four sides and has #2 brass grommets every 1 ft across the top and every 2 ft down the sides. You can hang them on wall hooks, on screws with washers, with S-hooks on a cable or chain, or with zip ties to fencing, framing or racking. Hang the blankets edge to edge, or overlap them slightly, because gaps between panels let sound escape.
How many sound blankets do I need?
Every blanket is 4 ft wide. Divide the length of the wall or area you want to cover by 4 and round up, then choose the height that fits. Heights run from 4 ft to 20 ft in 2 ft steps. For example, covering a 30 ft wall to a height of 8 ft takes eight 4 ft x 8 ft blankets.
Can I cut an acoustic blanket to fit?
We do not recommend it. Cutting the blanket opens the quilted fiberglass core, removes the hemmed edge and grommets, and lets the edge fray over time. Order the closest stock size, or call us at 800-678-1900 about custom sizes.
Are these noise control blankets fire rated?
Yes. The blankets meet NFPA 701 and ASTM E84 Class 1 flame resistance standards, which makes them suitable for most commercial and industrial buildings. If your project has specific code requirements, check with your local fire marshal or inspector.
Can I use these blankets outdoors or near hot equipment?
The blankets withstand temperatures up to 180°F, and the vinyl facing resists water and mildew, so they hold up well in shops, warehouses and plants. For permanent outdoor use, choose our outdoor sound curtains (SCC-9EXT). For enclosures around hot machinery, choose the high temperature soundproofing blanket (SCC-9HT).
How do I clean the blankets?
Wipe the vinyl-faced side with mild soap and water and let it air dry. Do not pressure wash or soak the blankets, because water forced into the fiberglass core can reduce performance.
Is there a minimum order for acoustic blankets?
Yes. Acoustic blanket orders have a $150 minimum. The minimum applies to the blanket total, so you can mix sizes and thicknesses to reach it. If your cart is under $150 in blankets, the cart page shows how much more you need to check out.
How long does it take to ship?
The gray acoustic wall blankets ship in 5 to 8 business days.
Can I use these blankets in a recording studio or home theater?
Yes. The same quilted fiberglass construction that controls industrial noise also treats echo in studios, home theaters, rehearsal rooms and podcast spaces. See our recording studio sound blankets for studio-specific setup ideas.
