Steel Guard Safety's insulated construction blankets have reinforced woven poly skins over a 3/16 inch poly PE foam core. The perimeter hems are folded and double stitched with UV resistant thread and reinforced with six grommets, set on the corners and at the center of each long side. They reach R-2.9 when laid over a frame, where an air pocket forms beneath the blanket and contributes to the total.

These are the general purpose insulating blankets for construction work. Light enough to spread across a large area quickly, tough enough to come back for a second season, and stocked in three sizes that ship in 2 to 4 business days.

Where These Get Used

• Concrete curing — laid over a pour or framed above it to hold the heat of hydration in so the mix keeps gaining strength overnight
• Ground insulation — spread over subgrade to hold ground heat and keep frost from setting in before a pour
• Insulated curtain barriers — hung vertically off a frame to close in a work area, with the six grommets giving you the tie points
• Winter enclosures — over scaffolding or framing to keep heaters effective in an open structure
• Material protection — over stored material to moderate temperature and shed water

Concrete Pouring in Cold Weather

Cold weather concreting practice generally applies once the average daily temperature falls below 40°F. In the range between roughly 24 and 41 degrees Fahrenheit, an insulated blanket is usually the difference between a pour that cures on schedule and one that stalls. The blanket holds the heat the mix generates as it cures, rather than adding heat of its own, which is why coverage and overlap matter as much as R-value.

Overlap blankets by at least 12 inches at the seams and carry coverage past the slab edge. Edges and corners lose heat fastest, and an uncovered edge will show up as a weak strip later.

Choosing a Thickness

This is the 3/16 inch build at R-2.9, which handles most winter pours where nights sit in the twenties and thirties. If you are dealing with harder or more sustained cold, or a specification that names a higher number, we make the same blanket in 3/8 inch at R-3.5 and 1/2 inch at R-5.7.

Larger Jobs and Summer Pours

For large slabs, the same R-2.9 blanket is available in a 25-pack with free shipping, which is the cheaper way to buy once you are past a few blankets. And if the problem is summer heat rather than cold, a wet cure blanket is the right product instead, since the risk there is moisture leaving the mix too fast rather than heat escaping.
