Lithium Battery Fire Blanket
When a lithium-ion battery goes into thermal runaway — a charging e-forklift, a pallet of battery inventory, a bank of tools or e-mobility devices — it doesn't behave like an ordinary fire. It generates its own oxygen, resists extinguishers, and can reignite for hours. The Steel Guard Lithium Battery Fire Blanket is built to contain exactly that event: drape it over the source to stop fire spread, block radiant heat, and control smoke until the battery burns out or responders can flood it.
This is a heavy-duty, reusable containment blanket — not a thin single-use drape. It's cut and sewn in our US factory from Draft-Tex™ fabric, built on Newtex Z-Block® silicone-coated fiberglass rated 1,800°F (982°C) continuous, and constructed to the design and test parameters of DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11, the European standard for lithium-ion fire blankets. Deploy it, train with it, inspect it, and return it to service — year after year.

Built to Be Reused
Most lithium fire blankets sold online are single-use: one deployment — real or accidental — and the blanket is scrap. Ours are engineered for a working life. In normal service you can deploy it in drills, train your team on it, inspect it, clean off oil or extinguishing water, refold it, and put it back on the wall. Only after exposure to an actual fire is it retired — at which point the coating in the contact zone has sacrificed itself to protect the glass beneath, which is exactly how it's designed to perform. Across a facility's lifetime, one reusable blanket replaces a stack of disposables.
Construction
- Body: Draft-Tex™ silicone-coated fiberglass (built on Newtex Z-Block® F-407), 1,800°F continuous rating. The 5'×6' is a single seamless panel; larger sizes use felled seams sewn with high-temperature Kevlar/stainless-core thread.
- Pulling handles: 2-inch reinforced loops on backed doublers, built and tested to a 125 kg (275 lb) shock load — not thin sewn tabs. Color-coded red on the pulling side so a two-person team knows where to grab in heavy smoke.
- Edges: hemmed and reinforced; center-of-side markers for fast two-person positioning.
- Thermal basis: benchmarked to the DIN SPEC 91489 test cycle — 23 minutes of direct flame cycling up to 1,832°F (1,000°C).
Every Blanket Ships as a Kit
Each blanket comes with a weatherproof storage bag, a document pouch, and an audit-ready documentation pack — a laminated deployment card, a serialized product record, safety information, and an inspection log. It's the paper trail your EHS program, insurer, and fire marshal actually ask for, and it's what turns a blanket in a bag into a documented, serialized piece of safety equipment. Add a wall-mounted Station Kit case to keep it deployment-ready next to your charging area.
How to Size It
A containment blanket must cover the burning object completely and lie flat on the ground at least 20 inches (0.5 m) beyond it on every side — that ground overlap is what starves the fire and blocks radiant heat. Measure your largest protected object, add roughly 40 inches to each dimension, and round up to the next size. Landing between sizes is exactly what the custom calculator is for.

Construction Standard
This blanket is constructed to the design and test parameters of DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 — the European technical specification for lithium-ion fire limitation blankets, developed by a consortium including German insurers and fire authorities. It governs loop strength, seam construction, thermal cycling, edge finishing, deployment, marking, and documentation. There is currently no equivalent US standard for these products. Steel Guard blankets are built to these parameters; they are not third-party certified to DIN SPEC 91489, and we do not represent them as certified, compliant, or approved under that specification.
Important Safety Notes
- This is a containment product, not an extinguisher. A lithium-ion battery in thermal runaway generates its own oxygen and can continue burning beneath the blanket. Call the fire department immediately.
- No electric shock protection. This blanket does not insulate against electrical hazard.
- Static charge. Dragging the blanket can generate frictional static, which in a worst case may ignite flammable battery vent gases.
- Re-ignition. Batteries can reignite hours or days after visible flames stop. Do not remove the blanket until cleared by qualified responders.
- Sizing rule. The blanket must cover the object completely and lie flat on the ground at least 20" (0.5 m) beyond it on all sides.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this lithium battery fire blanket reusable?
Yes. In normal service — drills, training, inspection, handling — you clean it and return it to service throughout its life. Only after exposure to an actual fire should it be retired and replaced, which is true of any lithium-ion fire blanket, because the contact-zone coating sacrifices itself to protect the fabric beneath.
Does it put out a lithium battery fire?
No fire blanket extinguishes a lithium-ion battery fire — the battery generates its own oxygen and can keep burning underneath. This blanket contains the event: it stops fire spread, blocks radiant heat, and controls smoke until the cell burns out or responders flood it with water. Always call the fire department first.
What temperature does it withstand?
The Draft-Tex™ fabric (built on Newtex Z-Block®) carries an 1,800°F (982°C) continuous working rating, and the blanket's construction is benchmarked to the DIN SPEC 91489 thermal test cycle of up to 1,832°F (1,000°C) for 23 minutes. Compare that against any single-use drape's rating before you buy.
Can I get a size that isn't listed?
Yes — the custom calculator builds any width and length to the same construction standard, priced instantly and produced in 2–3 weeks. Fleet quantities of 30+ units also ship in 2–3 weeks.
How fast will it ship?
Stocked 5×6, 10×10, and 15×15 blankets ship in 1–2 business days from our US factory. Custom sizes and fleet orders ship in 2–3 weeks — no import backorders.
