Cement Blankets for Cold Weather Curing

Steel Guard Safety has been sewing industrial fabric in South Holland, Illinois for a hundred years, and our cement blankets are built the way a job site product should be: reinforced woven polyethylene skins, a bonded poly foam core, folded hems double stitched in UV resistant thread, and grommets set every 36 inches. Available in 3/16", 3/8", and 1/2" thickness, reaching R-values of 2.9, 3.5, and 5.7 respectively when laid over a frame.

Cement Blanket or Concrete Blanket?

Both terms describe the same product, and which one a contractor uses tends to come down to trade and region. Strictly speaking, cement is the binder and concrete is the finished mix, so the blanket is technically insulating concrete. In practice nobody on a job site draws that line, and you will hear cement blanket, cement curing blanket, and concrete blanket used for the same thing on the same pour. If you searched for one and landed here, you are in the right place.

Built to Last

  • Reinforced perimeter hems — folded and double stitched with UV resistant thread. This is the seam that fails first on a cheap blanket, and it is where we spend the extra labor.
  • Industrial strength grommets — spaced every 36 inches, so you can hang the blanket vertically as a windbreak or tie it down flat without tearing out an edge.
  • Hydrophobic foam core — the micro-foam does not waterlog, which means the blanket holds its insulating value through a wet season instead of losing it after the first soaking.
  • Thermal range — R-2.9, R-3.5, and R-5.7, so you can match the blanket to the climate rather than buying one thickness and hoping.

Cold Weather Cement Work

Cement blankets protect against wind and cold, holding the heat of hydration in so the mix keeps gaining strength instead of stalling out overnight. Lay them flat over flatwork or hang them off a frame as vertical curtains to close in a work area. Framing the blanket rather than laying it directly on the surface creates an air pocket beneath, which is where the stated R-values come from.

The 3/16" and 3/8" ship from stock in 1 to 2 business days. The 1/2" is built to order in our own plant, so specify it early in the season rather than the week you need it on site.

Summer Pours and Wet Curing

Cold weather is not the only condition that needs a blanket. In summer heat, the problem is moisture leaving the mix too fast, which leads to surface cracking and a weak finish. For those pours, a wet cure blanket is the right product.

See our Poly Burlap Wet Cure Blankets — 10 oz burlap laminated to 5 mil white polyethylene, which holds water against the surface while reflecting UV. Sold in 10 by 100 foot rolls.

Ordering

Overlap blankets by at least 12 inches at the seams and carry coverage past the slab edge, since edges and corners lose heat fastest. For large slabs, ask about bulk pricing on the full curing blanket range.

Call 800-678-1900 Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central and our inside sales staff will help you size the order.

Cement Blanket FAQs

What is a cement blanket?

A cement blanket is an insulated cover laid over fresh cement work to hold in the heat generated as the mix cures. Reinforced poly skins on the outside, a foam core in the middle. Without one, a cold night can stall the cure or freeze the mix before it reaches the strength it needs. With one, the pour keeps curing on schedule.

Is a cement blanket the same as a concrete blanket?

Yes. The two terms are used interchangeably on job sites. Technically cement is the binder and concrete is the finished mix, so the blanket is insulating concrete, but nobody in the trade draws that line in conversation. You will also hear cement curing blanket, concrete curing blanket, and frost blanket used for the same product.

How much do cement blankets cost?

Ours start at $66.95 for a 6 by 25 foot blanket and run up based on size and thickness. The 12 by 25 foot in the heaviest R-5.7 build is the top of the range. Price scales with foam thickness and square footage, so a thicker blanket over a larger area costs more on both counts. Bulk pricing is available on 25-packs if you are covering a large slab.

Which R-value should I buy?

R-2.9 handles most winter pours where nights sit in the twenties and thirties. R-3.5 is the step up for colder nights or a longer cure window. R-5.7 is for hard sustained cold, thin sections that shed heat fast, or a spec that calls for a specific number. If you are between two, size up. Under-insulating a pour costs more to fix than the price difference.

Do I need an air gap under the blanket?

The stated R-values assume an air pocket beneath the blanket, which forms when it is laid over a frame. Directly against the surface with no gap, the blanket still works but the effective insulation is lower than the rated figure. On flatwork where framing is impractical this is normal. On a spec that names an R-value, frame it.

At what temperature do I need cement blankets?

Cold weather practice generally kicks in when the average daily temperature drops below 40°F. Below that, the mix gains strength slowly and risks freezing before it is strong enough to survive it. Check your mix supplier's guidance and the project specification for the requirements on your job.

Can cement blankets be reused?

Yes, across multiple seasons with reasonable handling. Let them dry fully before folding and storing. Storing wet is what ruins them. Dragging across gravel is what wears the skins.

What about summer pours?

Different problem, different product. In heat the risk is moisture leaving the mix too fast, which causes surface cracking. A wet cure blanket holds water against the surface instead of holding heat in. Our poly burlap rolls are built for that.

Are cement blankets returnable?

No. Cement blankets are not refundable. Call before you order if you are unsure about thickness or size and we will get it right the first time.

How fast do they ship?

The 3/16" and 3/8" usually ship in 1 to 2 business days. The 1/2" is made to order in our plant with a current lead time of 25 to 35 business days.
